Youth SLM Data

Last updated 15 October 2019

The Ministry is working to provide the national baseline data for each of the five domains of the Youth SLM. We will work to update this information quarterly or six-monthly, depending on the availability of the data. Notifications of updates will be included in the SLM communications.

For technical definitions on the measures, please see the HQMNZ website.

Youth Experience of the Health System - Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Real- Time Survey results for 10-24 year olds

Information provided in this spreadsheet shows the volume of CAMHS Marama Real-Time Surveys completed or partially completed in the 12-24 age group. It also shows aggregated results of the surveys through a pivot chart.

Information was sourced through the PRIMHD and Marama. No data is available for the 10-12 year olds.

Sexual and Reproductive Health - Chlamydia testing coverage for 15-24 year olds

The data is the latest available from ESR (Institute of Environmental Science and Research) and details the number of young people tested for chlamydia, number of laboratory-confirmed cases, chlamydia rates, percentage of young people tested that were positive and percent of people tested by age group and sex. ESR also included the same information for gonorrhoea.

Please note that the following spreadsheets for the Youth System Project for STI rates have been updated

  • Each workbook (2013 – 2016) now contains notes on how to read and interpret the data
  • The 2014 workbook Youth SLM analysis: West Coast DHB worksheet - coverage rates should have been a percentage, not a value for per thousand of population, now corrected in the updated version
  • The 2015 workbook Youth SLM analysis: Mid Central and Northland DHBs worksheets - coverage rates should have been a percentage, not a value for per thousand of population, now corrected in the updated version

The first sheet in each workbook provides the national rates. The subsequent workbooks provide information by DHB (except for Auckland and Wellington, where the information is provided regionally)

Mental Health and Wellbeing - Self-harm hospitalisations and short stay ED presentations

Youth Population Aged 10 to 24 Years

This data shows the total number of self-harm hospitalisations among young people aged 10-24 (captured in NMDS) divided by the number of youth in the NZ resident population (Stats NZ). The title page provides further information on the measure.

Whilst the measure is meant for the youth population (<25), this report covers other age groups as well for comparison. Users have the ability to select the cohort of interest based on the drill down buttons in each tab as well as the standard population on the title page.

Note: Users should be careful when using some of the data due to quality issues. Please note the following three DHBs (of service) have unusually low discharges in the the first quarter of 2019.

  • Canterbury
  • Hutt
  • Wairarapa

With each new report, the measures for all the periods of data that are presented are recalculated, not just the latest period. In other words the latest period results are not appended to previous results. As a result differences may exist for earlier times periods if compared to previous reports. These differences could be due to late returns and/or coding changes. Users will be explicitly informed of any change in the methodology for each of the measures.
